After years of development and setbacks, Lionsgate and Universal have finally announced a firm date for Michael, the long-awaited biopic of pop icon Michael Jackson. The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, will premiere on April 24, 2026 in the U.S., with international distribution handled by Universal—except in Japan, where Kino Films will take charge.

Casting and Production Update

Jaafar Jackson headlines the cast in his feature debut, while Colman Domingo and Nia Long portray Michael’s parents Joe and Katherine Jackson. Miles Teller joins as entertainment lawyer John Branca, alongside performances from Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, Laura Harrier, Derek Luke, and Kendrick Sampson.

Filming concluded in May 2024, but continued into 2025 with additional photography. The production briefly faced legal complications surrounding consent to portray the 1993 allegations linked to the Chandler family, which triggered extensive reshoots earlier this year.

Delays, Runtime, and Two‑Part Possibility

The film’s release has shifted repeatedly. Initially slated for April 2025, it was postponed to October 2025 before landing on April 2026. At over three and a half hours in its initial form, plans are under review to potentially split Michael into two parts to preserve narrative depth.

Lionsgate CFO Adam Fogelson noted on their May earnings call that the film might be broken into two segments. Part of the reason lies in its length and the studio’s strategy to strengthen its 2027 slate.

Creative Vision and Tone

Writer John Logan, known for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody, strives for an “honest portrayal” of Jackson’s complex life—balancing the artist’s brilliance with his personal struggles.

Antoine Fuqua emphasized the decision to approach the narrative without sanitizing or mythologizing. He framed Jackson as a man navigating enormous fame, familial pressure, and the weight of public scrutiny.

What Lies Ahead

With the April 2026 release now official, marketing efforts are expected to ramp up this winter. December should bring the first trailer, while Cannes and other early-2026 festivals may showcase teasers or select footage.

Fans and critics alike remain eager to see how the film handles Jackson’s legacy. The family-approved casting of Jaafar Jackson and the behind-the-scenes complexity promise a fresh, emotionally resonant cinematic experience.
