Misty Copeland said Wednesday she is in recovery after hip replacement surgery. The ballet star shared the update in a candid social media post this week.

Copeland, 43, retired from the American Ballet Theatre last October.
Her farewell performance drew wide attention and a stream of tributes.

Focused on Healing

Copeland wrote, “A few months ago, I stepped off the stage after my final bow.” She continued, “Not too long after that, I had hip replacement surgery.”

“Since then, I’ve been focused on healing — physically, mentally, and patiently,” she added.

In interviews last year, Copeland described a severe hip injury that worsened before her final show. She told reporters she “physically couldn’t walk” in the days after the farewell.

Copeland’s posts showed early recovery moments. They included photos of gentle movement and brief walks.

A new chapter, cautiously taken

The dancer said the surgery came as she moved into an expanded life. She recently became a mother and began projects beyond the stage.

Her public message mixed gratitude and realism. She thanked fans for support and asked for patient understanding.

Health experts say hip replacement is common among athletes with chronic joint damage. Recovery often includes physical therapy and gradual return to activity.

Copeland has described adjusting her routine to support bone health. She mentioned anti-inflammatory habits and nutrition in recent interviews.

Friends and colleagues sent messages on social media. The ballet community praised her career and wished her a strong recovery.

Copeland dominated headlines during her 25-year career at ABT. She became the company’s first Black principal dancer and a global figure.

Her announcement closes one public chapter and opens another.
She said she will keep working on projects offstage while she heals.

Fans responded with concern and encouragement on social media.
Many celebrated her honesty about pain and recovery.

Copeland ended her post with resolve and humility.

“I am focused on healing,” she wrote.
