MSNBC Rebrands To ‘MS NOW’ Amid Split from NBC Universal

MSNBC announced that it will rebrand as My Source News Opinion World, or MS NOW, later this year.

In a statement, MSNBC assured viewers its new name “underscores our mission: to serve as your destination for breaking news and thoughtful analysis” as it splits with NBC News. The channel will now be a part of Versant, a spin-off from Comcast, and will join the business news channel CNBC, Golf Channel, GolfNow and SportsEngine. CNBC, which initially stood for Consumer News and Business Channell will keep, it’s current name.

“For our viewers who have watched us for decades, it may be hard to imagine this network by any other name. We understand. But our promise to you remains as it always has. You know who we are, and what we do,” the statement continued.

“This was not a decision that was made quickly or without significant debate,” MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler said in a memo to staff.

“During this time of transition, NBC Universal decided that our brand requires a new, separate identity,” she said. “This decision now allows us to set our own course and assert our independence as we continue to build our own modern newsgathering organization.

MS NOW aims to maintain its appeal to progressive viewers while carving out a unique identity. The network’s programming, driven by its prominent personalities, Rachel Maddow, Ari Melber, and Nicole Wallace, will continue to focus on opinion-driven news coverage.

“Regardless of our name, our commitment to this community remains as strong as it’s ever been and in the months ahead we will unveil new ways to connect with you directly,” MSNBC said. “We will continue to cover the day’s news, ask the questions that matter most, and share how it impacts you, without fear or favor.”

Name changes in media

MSNBC’s name change follows a slate of companies who have rebranded in recent years. In 2019 Dunkin’ Donuts became Dunkin, 2021, social giant Facebook became Meta, Twitter became X in 2023, among others.

According to IMD, there are a myriad of reasons companies opt for a rebrand. Reputation management, market expansion and mergers and acquisitions.
