Mýa is back with new music.

The Grammy Award-winning singer recently released her latest single, “ASAP.” Co-produced by LaMar “MyGuyMars” Edwards and Mýa herself, the sultry new track is bringing all the vibes.

During an interview on Sherri, Mýa shared how it was Prince who inspired her to be an independent artist.

“When I first went independent, I didn’t necessarily know what it was and what it meant in totality. But when I did go independent, someone who called me knew what it was, and you knew the landscape,” Mýa said.

“[He] wanted to pull me aside, to inspire me, but also reinforce that this is the way, and I’ll help you along the way. That artist was the artist we all know and love. His name is Prince.”

“When Prince says that, I guess that’s what you need to do,” Shepard replied.

Mýa went on to share how being independent gave her the freedom that artists need.

“So I’m from the major label system. But independence has allowed me to have a sense of creative freedom. Also, knowing what’s going on and going out at all times,” she said. “My mother’s my accountant, and she keeps the books straight.’

“Ain’t nobody getting nothing past mama,” Shepard joked.

“It’s a sense of empowerment. You know, music is very fun, it’s a gift,” Mýa explained. “Independence has helped me keep that intact.’

Mýa also announced her forthcoming tenth studio album, Retrospect, releasing on Planet 9, her label, in partnership with Virgin Music.

The LP features appearances by 21 Savage and Joyner Lucas. Retrospect will be Mýa’s first full-length release since 2018’s T.K.O. (The Knock Out).

“Music wasn’t just a part of my life; it was the heartbeat of my home, the foundation of my joy,” Mýa said. “This album is a celebration of that and the kind of funk that never fades. It’s a bridge between the past and the future, honoring the greats, my inspirations, while forging something new.”
