A&E is set to premiere the highly anticipated documentary, James Brown: Say It Loud, directed by Deborah Riley-Draper. It is executive produced by Mick Jagger, Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson, Tariq ‘Black Thought’ Trotter, Shawn Gee, and others.
The documentary delves into the innovative, influential, and complex life and legacy of the iconic crooner, James Brown. It explores his journey from delinquency to becoming a cultural force of nature, showcasing his impact on music, style, and culture through exclusive interviews, never-before-seen archival footage, and his revered discography.
The documentary was produced in cooperation with the James Brown Estate’s owner and custodian, Primary Wave.
Questlove reflects on Brown’s contributions, stating, “I love two things he brought to the table were two taboo words: funk and Black.”
Rev. Al Sharpton notes how Brown “marched to his own drum, literally.”
Interviews and performances featured in the documentary include insights from Bootsy Collins, LL Cool J, Chuck D, Dallas Austin, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and more.
Mick Jagger, who is both featured in and executive producer of the documentary, emphasizes Brown’s brilliance and unique ability to combine influences. The project features previously unseen archival footage and interviews with Brown’s collaborators, fans, and family members.
The four-part film will air over two nights on Feb. 19 and Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
