We’ve watched Ne-Yo evolve as a songwriter, producer, and three-time Grammy Award-winning artist since 2006. He’s dropped chart-topping six albums over the past 12 years, and now he’s gearing up for another. His seventh studio album is slated for release this summer, so he decided to release his new single, “Good Man,” to hold fans over in the meantime.
The Arkansas native sat down with our famed Steve Harvey Morning Show today, and gave us the inside scoop about his experiences as a husband and father and the on the meaning behind his upcoming project.
To kick things off, Uncle Steve asked Ne-Yo about his growing family, and how he and his wife are preparing for their fourth child.
“The family is fantastic,” the singer said. “As you already know, wifey is pregnant…she’s about five months in.”
When Shirley Strawberry asked about baby names, she referenced Kim and Kanye’s newborn daughter, Chicago, and asked if he would follow the usual celebrity footsteps and name his baby boy something rare and off the cuff.
Ne-Yo laughed and said, “[My] family is Maddie, mason, and SJ, but haven’t decided on a name for lil man yet. I love my kids so I wouldn’t [name] them [something crazy] like that. I wouldn’t call him Vegas.”
As the conversation transitioned into the story behind his upcoming project, the singer/songwriter said, “I am 38 years old. I am a grown ass man at this point. My priorities have changed…I’m in another place, man: Being a good father to my kids, a good husband to my wife, and a good person to the world.”
He went on to say, “I don’t want anyone to think I’m saying I’m better than anyone else. The album is about the journey of a good man. A good man learns from his mistakes and doesn’t make them again.”
Fans have some time before the full-length album hits stores and digital platforms nationwide, but his “Good Man” track is a good way to get them ready for what’s to come.
