Actress Nia Long recently offered a candid reflection on her evolving co-parenting relationship with former fiancé Ime Udoka, following the upheaval of his publicized affair. Now, Long says they have found “peace and understanding” while raising their son, Kez Sunday Udoka.

Mutual Respect After Public Turmoil

In a new feature for The Cut, Long said, “We’ve had a very public journey that has found its way to peace and understanding. And there’s a lot of mutual respect that we have for each other.” She added, “The most important gift you can give your kids is to heal your trauma.”

Long described a recent trip the parents took together with Kez, saying, “This summer, I traveled with my youngest son and my ex, Ime. We had a great time.” The actress noted that, though healing is ongoing, they are committed to putting their child first.

She told the publication she refuses to carry “burdensome energy,” explaining, “That just transfers to my children and it transfers to everything else in my life.” Long also voiced pride: “I’m proud of myself. I think we’re proud of each other as the parents of Kez.”

The couple’s breakup in late 2022 followed reports that Udoka had an affair with a staff member during his tenure with the Boston Celtics. The disclosure prompted a league suspension and widespread media scrutiny.

Long has spoken openly about the emotional aftermath. In a prior interview, she described the revelation as “a gut punch” and criticized how the Celtics handled the affair. She has since focused on protecting her children from lingering tension.

Documents filed after their split outline custody and support terms. Long secured sole physical custody of Kez, while Udoka retains reasonable visitation rights. She is to receive $32,000 per month in child support. The agreement considers Udoka’s NBA coaching travel schedule.

Though their romantic relationship ended painfully, Long emphasizes that the two now work together in their roles as co-parents. She remarked, “We’re both going to be standing there watching him graduate.”

She also expressed goodwill toward Udoka’s career. “I hope he wins. He deserves to win. He’s really great at what he does,” she said, adding that their co-parenting dynamic helps maintain stability around Kez.

Long acknowledged imperfection in motherhood, but embraced honesty. “I’m not a perfect mother. I’ve made many mistakes … my kids have seen me go through it,” she said. She continued, “That’s the type of mother I am. If I’m pissed, everyone knows. If I’m happy, everyone knows.”
