Questlove has not been letting up lately. The musical mastermind has now been confirmed to direct the live-action hybrid of The Aristocats for Disney.
Not only will he use his expertise as the director of the film but will also executive produce and oversee the music for it. The hybrid aspect will be similar to films like Space Jam: A New Legacy, or Sonic The Hedgehog. The film will be a balance of live-action and CGI.
Peter Rabbit filmmaker, Will Gluck and Onward writer Keith Bunin are currently adapting the original film as a screenplay. Execute producers of the film include Tarik Trotter, Shawn Gee and Zarah Zohlman. Gluck’s production company Olive Bridge, will produce the film along with Questlove’s Two One Five Entertainment.
The original film debuted in 1970 as an animated musical. Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman of One Hundred and One Dalmatians’ fame, it follows a family of Parisian house cats. The group of felines learns that they are set to inherit a large fortune from their elderly owner. When the owner’s butler learns of the news, he kidnaps them and leaves them in the country. The gang then teams up with a smooth-talking tomcat to try to make it back home before it’s too late.
Questlove’s Consistent Wins
The comes just days after the Roots drummer announced that his publishing imprint, AUWA Books, will release Sly Stone’s memoir in October. Along with writing a foreword in the book, he will also be directing the documentary about the funk legend.
The musician is no stranger to films as well. He has already joined the small list of Black Oscar winners just last year. He won the award in the Best Documentary Feature category for directing the film Summer Of Soul. It also won the top prize for U.S. documentary at the Sundance Film Festival the previous year.
