Questlove To Direct Upcoming Earth, Wind & Fire Documentary

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is set to direct a highly anticipated documentary chronicling the rise of legendary band Earth, Wind & Fire. The documentary will provide a deep dive into the group’s lasting cultural impact, with Questlove at the helm, ensuring a fresh perspective on their enduring legacy.

Earth, Wind & Fire, known for timeless hits like “September” and “Shining Star,” has sold over 90 million records worldwide and garnered six Grammy Awards. Their impressive 11 consecutive gold or platinum albums solidified their position as one of the most successful and influential bands in music history.

A New Perspective on a Legendary Band

Questlove expressed his personal connection to the band in a statement. “Having been baptized in the Afrocentric joy river of this powerhouse unit, I’ve learned about them, I’ve learned about us & more importantly, I’ve learned and rediscovered myself in the process,” he said. The project aims to delve into the group’s unique story, focusing on themes of “Soul, Self & Struggle.”

The documentary promises to give fans exclusive access to unseen archives, including audio, visual, and written materials, with the full support of Maurice White’s estate. Earth, Wind & Fire members Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson also shared their excitement. “We look forward to this in-depth journey of our band, and are so excited to have Questlove directing the documentary,” they said in a joint statement.

Questlove Takes the Lead

Questlove’s directorial work on “Summer of Soul” earned him an Academy Award, making him a trusted voice in music documentaries. His passion for preserving musical history is evident. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to give audiences unfettered access to one of the most successful and culturally meaningful music groups in history,” said Mary Lisio, EVP of Fifth Season, which is financing the project.

The Earth, Wind & Fire documentary is set to premiere in 2025 and promises to be a captivating exploration of the band’s profound contributions to music and culture. Fans can expect an in-depth, emotional tribute to one of the most influential bands of all time.
