On May 28, 2025, Philadelphia honored Emmy-winning actress and writer Quinta Brunson with the city’s highest civilian accolade—the key to the city. The ceremony took place at Andrew Hamilton School, Brunson’s alma mater and the inspiration for her hit series, Abbott Elementary.
Mayor Cherelle Parker presented the key, prompting Brunson to joke, “Wow! I want to ask the question on everybody’s mind: What does it open?” The event celebrated public education and featured the unveiling of a mural titled “Blooming Features,” created by artist Athena Scott with input from Brunson and the school community. The mural, wrapping around the school’s red brick facade, depicts real individuals from the school rather than actors from the show.
Brunson emphasized the importance of representation, stating, “You don’t need to see famous people on the wall. You need to see you on the wall. Painted, beautiful. We are beautiful. It makes a difference.”
A Tribute to Educators and Community
The ceremony was attended by Brunson’s family, including her parents and siblings, as well as Joyce Abbott, the teacher who inspired the show’s name. Brunson’s mother, Norma Jean, a former kindergarten teacher, and her experiences in Philadelphia public schools heavily influenced the creation of Abbott Elementary.
Jane Golden, executive director of Mural Arts Philadelphia … praised the initiative, noting the city’s commitment to accessible public art. “When people visit Philadelphia, they are struck by the works … “For us, this is a … .”
Brunson’s dedication to highlighting the challenges and triumphs of public education has earned her widespread acclaim. She has previously been honored by the Philadelphia City Council and received the 2024 Lew Klein Award for Excellence in the Media from Temple University, her former college. In her acceptance speech at Temple’s commencement, she humorously noted, “Mom, it only took me 11 years, two Emmys, and one Golden Globe to finally get a degree. I told you I would do it.”
The key to the city and the mural serve as testaments to Brunson’s impact on her community and her commitment to uplifting underrepresented voices through storytelling.
