In a candid appearance on the Drop The Lo podcast hosted by Evelyn Lozada and Shaniece Hairston, Ray‑J opened up about feeling estranged from his family—especially his sister Brandy.
“I love my sister, but I’m an embarrassment to them,” Ray‑J admitted when asked about their relationship. The 44‑year‑old artist paused before emphasizing, “I never wanted to be accepted. I just feel like I’m an embarrassment.”
Family Ties Still Intact
Despite the emotional distance, Ray‑J assured that family connections remain. He revealed, “My kids were over at Brandy’s house two days ago. Epik calls his auntie every day.” He continued, “We say what’s up, but other than that, we haven’t talked.”
He described how his son acts as a bridge between them: “I see her, I’m like, ‘What’s up?’ But we haven’t talked.”
Feeling Misunderstood
Ray‑J directly challenged his family’s expectations. “It’s like you don’t want me to be me,” he said. “But I’m superseding everything y’all doing.”
He described his family’s critique as coming from a lack of understanding. “They’re not intelligent enough to know what’s going on in the digital world,” he explained, adding that only family criticism truly affects him.
Public Perception and Support
On the podcast, Lozada defended Ray‑J. “I think that’s what people love about you. You’re funny and outspoken,” she said, noting his appeal lies in authenticity.
He pushed back against critics online, saying, “I’ll never go broke. I’ll never have to do the dog and pony show.”
A Rocky But Not Broken Bond
Though Ray‑J described the sibling relationship as “not good,” he believes things can improve. “I think we’re good and we’ll be okay,” he said, expressing optimism if tensions are addressed.
He recalled how their bond once was closer, sharing how family support was evident in earlier years.
