Ray J (legal name William Ray Norwood Jr.) has filed a countersuit against Kim Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, alleging they breached a settlement agreement tied to their shared past and sparked a broader legal battle.
Alleged Breach of a Prior Mediation Deal
According to the complaint, Ray J contends that in mediation in 2023 he and Kardashian entered into an agreement that included her paying him $6 million and both parties committing to “refrain from any further public reference to the [sex tape].” He asserts that two episodes of the reality series The Kardashians aired after that deal and included multiple references to the tape, thereby violating the contract..m Ray J’s filing states the settlement barred Kardashian and Jenner from disparaging each other or continuing “past, current or future disputes” publicly.
Ray J further claims Jenner and Kardashian attempted to have him sign an amendment that would excuse references in the show — an offer he declined.
In his countersuit, Ray J alleges that the 2007 tape was not released without consent, but rather that Kardashian insisted her mother oversee its commercial release, and that both Kardashian and Jenner “spent two decades peddling the false story that the sex tape … was leaked against her will.” He writes that the matter involves “publicity, power and punishment,” rather than strictly defamation. (The complaint also introduces allegations under the civil Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) statute, claiming the mother-daughter duo conspired with the adult-entertainment company Vivid Entertainment to release the tape and then lied about it.
Ray J is seeking at least $1 million in damages, plus relief that would dismiss or limit Kardashian and Jenner’s lawsuit against him.
Background
Last month, Kardashian and Jenner filed a defamation suit against Ray J in Los Angeles, accusing him of falsely claiming they were under federal investigation for racketeering. The suit noted that Ray J had stated publicly, “The federal RICO I’m about to drop on Kris and Kim is about to be crazy,” and “the feds is coming.”The Kardashian-Jenner filing described a “years-long campaign of harassment and defamation” that “exploited their names for personal gain.”
Kardashian and Jenner’s attorney, Alex Spiro, responded to Ray J’s countersuit with a sharp statement: “After realizing he is losing the case and losing his way, this disjointed rambling distraction is not intimidating anyone. Ray J will lose this frivolous case too.” Representatives for Ray J did not immediately comment.
