In a visit to the “Drop the Lo” podcast hosted by Evelyn Lozada and Shaniece Hairston, Ray J revealed his estranged relationship with his sister, Brandy and the family.
During the podcast, Ray J did not shy away from discussing his current status with Brandy. He stated, “I love my sister, but I’m an embarrassment to them,” highlighting his feelings of inadequacy within his family. When asked by Shaniece if he felt unaccepted, Ray reiterated, “I never wanted to be accepted, I just feel like I’m an embarrassment.” This heartfelt admission sheds light on the emotional struggles he has faced, particularly in light of recent public controversies, such as his public disagreements with other celebrities.
“There’s certain things that I feel like we should all do as a family that her and my cousin might not agree upon. But, you know, to each his own,” he stated.
He discussed that despite he and his sister not seeing eye to eye, his children still actively talk to their aunt, Brandy. “My little niece is 21, 22. She comes and hangs out with Melody and Epik. My kids were over at Brandy’s house two days ago. So Epik calls his auntie every day. He loves his auntie. So we were able to get on the phone through him. He was talking to her and I see her, I’m like, what’s up? But other than that, we haven’t talked. I gotta do me, you know?”
The tension between Ray J and Brandy caught public attention, tied to Ray J’s behavior on social media and streaming sites. In one instance, Brandy reacted to him reaching out to content creator Kai Cenat by sending him a worried message. Ray J then shared a screenshot of her message on Instagram. Along with the screenshot, he wrote about feeling misunderstood by his family.
On the podcast, Ray J shared that his family’s treatment towards him is unfair. “It’s just tough because you only feel bad when your family has a problem. Your family is the only people that can get to you. When your mom or your sister or your dad or your cousin start questioning the algorithm, I just feel like it’s not fair and they’re not intelligent enough to know what’s going on in the digital world.”
He continued, “Like, I’ll never go broke. I’ll never have to do the dog and pony show. I love being on stage, but with the sh*t I know and the codes I know, we’ll always be safe.
I know digital and I know survival.”
