Despite the critical and commercial success of his latest film, Sinners, director Ryan Coogler has no plans for a sequel. In a recent interview, Coogler stated, “I’ve never considered a sequel. This story was always meant to stand alone.”
A Standalone Vision
Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers Smoke and Stack Moore. Set in 1930s Mississippi, the film blends supernatural horror with themes of music and redemption. Coogler emphasized that the film’s narrative was designed to be self-contained. “The film is very genre-fluid,” he explained. “Yes, vampires are an element, but it’s not the only supernatural aspect. The film is about more than just that.”
Coogler drew inspiration from his personal history, particularly his Mississippi roots. “My maternal grandfather is from Mississippi,” he shared. “The seed of the movie started with that relationship with my uncle — how he would listen to blues music all the time.”
Emphasis on Theatrical Experience
Coogler also highlighted the importance of the theatrical experience for Sinners. “This is what it was made for,” he said. “It’s my love letter to the theatrical experience. It’s an experience that’s under threat. That’s why we shot on a large format.”
The film was shot using IMAX 65mm, embracing large-format cinematography to create an immersive experience. Coogler even sought advice from Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas on how to use the format effectively.
No Sequel Plans
Despite the film’s success, Coogler remains firm in his decision not to pursue a sequel. “I’ve never considered a sequel,” he reiterated. “This story was always meant to stand alone.”
Sinners is now available for digital streaming on platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV. A 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release is scheduled for July 8, 2025.
