Samira Wiley opens about being body-shamed while at a photoshoot and it has affected her.
During an interview, Wiley said, “I remember this one so vividly because I feel like I have a healthy body image. And I was on the shoot and one of the outfits they put me in was something that showed a bit of midriff,” the actor said.
“And honestly, I thought it was fine. But someone on the set was like, ‘Oh, don’t worry. We can fix that in post,’” Wiley added.
She went on to say that she had a “pretty good attitude about her body at the time, and the remark didn’t really put me in a horrible mood.” However, the comment didn’t sit well with her because it meant something bigger.
“I can’t imagine what all of these young girls who are just looking at these magazines, and their perception is that this is reality and it’s not.”
Since the incident, Samira Wiley has decided to take the conversation about body imaging and shaming a bit further by producing the upcoming documentary called “The Gratitude Project,” a film that will feature stories from people who have found ways to better themselves through showing their bodies gratitude.
The film is set to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival in June.
