Saweetie made history as ESPN’s first-ever female Monday Night Football music curator.
On Saturday, Sept. 6, at ESPN’s Red Nail Bar pop-up salon event, the Bay Area native spoke with PEOPLE, and she shared her excitement about the new partnership.
“Football was the first sport I ever played in my life,” Saweetie said. “I come from a really big football family. All my uncles played in college. My dad played in college. My grandfather played in the NFL. So football was probably the first ball I ever took.”
“So I was super excited when ESPN asked me — honored, actually,” she continued.
In this role, Saweetie will choose music for Monday Night Football for ESPN games throughout the season. She’ll also be featured in promotional spots, live telecasts, and on Monday Night Countdown.
“It’s the biggest night of the week, so I’m just happy they trust me and my music tastes,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to curating playlists and sharing some upcoming musicians with fans.”
If you’re wondering if she’ll add some of her own new music during the season, Saweetie said: “I also have a few tricks up my sleeve.”
According to Saweetie, playing sports teaches you much about life and still applies these lessons in her life as a successful artist and entrepreneur. With so many women at the forefront of sports, she’s elated to be working with ESPN.
Playing a sport teaches you so much — handling pressure, working as a team, being disciplined,” she says. “Those are the qualities I look for when I hire people, too. Sports really give you invaluable skills you can carry anywhere.”
As a fashionista, Saweetie likes to keep it simple when she’s curating her game-day fits.
“Give me sneakers, jeans, and a T-shirt,” she laughed. “I wanna be comfortable.”
