Selena’s legacy lives on.
On Tuesday (Oct 21), Netflix released the trailer for Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, a documentary on the late music icon featuring never-before-seen footage and interviews to honor Selena’s legacy, that of her family band and looking into what someone in the trailer refers to as the “very dangerous team behind her.”
Premiering November 17, the new doc already snagged a win at the Sundance Film Festival. The film became such hot property at the Festival, that it eventually was pulled from Sundance after fans started showing clips from the movie they’d recorded off their screens.
Director Isabel Castro spent two years combing through rare archival footage to make the film. Executive producers include Michele Anthony and Selena’s siblings, Suzette Quintanilla and A.B. Quintanilla III — who also played drums and bass in the band.
“As a filmmaker, I wanted to honor her extraordinary rise and enduring legacy, while also giving a window into her life behind the stage,” says Castro. “Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before. I am deeply grateful to her family for their trust and support throughout this journey, and I can’t wait for a global audience to experience the magic, heart, and community that Selena gave to all of us.”
The Grammy Award winner catapulted to fame in the early nineties thanks to hit singles like “Como La Flor,” “Baila Esta Cumbia,” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” She was tragically killed at age 23 in 1995 by her former fan club president, Yolanda Saldívar.
