Pro Football Hall of Famer and media personality Shannon Sharpe has postponed the live tour of his “Nightcap” podcast following serious sexual assault allegations. The tour, co-hosted with former NFL star Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, was set to launch this summer but is now rescheduled for summer 2026.
Allegations and Legal Proceedings
The decision comes after a $50 million civil lawsuit was filed against Sharpe in Clark County, Nevada, by a woman identified as Jane Doe. She alleges that Sharpe raped her in October 2024 and January 2025 during a nearly two-year relationship that began when she was 20. The lawsuit also accuses Sharpe of using physical force and inflicting emotional distress.
Sharpe has vehemently denied the allegations. In a statement released by his attorney, Lanny J. Davis, Sharpe described the lawsuit as a “blatant and cynical attempt to shake down” him for millions of dollars. He maintains that the relationship was entirely consensual.
In response to the lawsuit, Sharpe announced a temporary leave from his ESPN duties, including his role on “First Take.” He stated, “I will be devoting this time to my family, and responding and dealing with these false and disruptive allegations set against me.” Sharpe plans to return to ESPN at the start of the NFL preseason.
Public Reaction and Additional Allegations
The allegations have sparked significant public backlash, especially after a resurfaced video clip showed Sharpe making controversial comments about younger women. In the clip, Sharpe compares older and younger women in an unflattering light, which has further fueled public anger.
Adding to the controversy, comedian and rapper Justina Valentine faced criticism after making a joke about the lawsuit during a May 19 episode of the “Nightcap” podcast, which featured Sharpe himself. The remark has gone viral, with many viewers expressing discomfort and anger over the insensitivity of the joke.
This is not the first time Sharpe has faced such allegations. In 2010, his ex-girlfriend Michele Bundy accused him of sexual assault, leading to a temporary restraining order. Sharpe took a leave of absence from his role at CBS Sports during that time.
As the legal proceedings continue, Sharpe’s future in broadcasting and public life remains uncertain. He has expressed gratitude for the support he has received and remains committed to clearing his name.
