How It Started

The controversy erupted following Shyne’s appearance on Cam’ron and Mase’s show, It Is What It Is. Both former Bad Boy rappers suggested they were romantically involved with Brandy during the same era.

“Let the record reflect I DID NOT “HIT IT FIRST”……,” Shyne said in an Instagram with himself, Brandy and Ray J.

The moment quickly went viral, sparking widespread conversation online and even drawing a reaction from Brandy’s brother, Ray J.

Brandy’s Response

Brandy didn’t stay silent for long. The Grammy-winning singer took to Instagram to address the claims head-on, describing her history with the “Bad Boys” rapper as strictly platonic, while also promoting her upcoming memoir.

”In the late 90’s, I had a platonic friendship with rapper Shyne,” she said on Instagram. “In an unfortunate turn of events, that friendship is now being mischaracterized as ‘we dated.’ Unequivocally, we did not. I’m not sure why an untrue narrative about a scope of what was a friendship more than 20-years ago is being reshaped during his current media interviews.”

The “Bonnie & Shyne” rapper was recently questioned why Brandy would downplay what he insists was a romantic relationship.

“She lied to Oprah about being married and had to go on Oprah and apologize because she said she did that to protect her image,” he said to TMZ. “I can’t get in her mind. I’m just saying that she has lied to the public before to protect her image. And maybe the fact that she was seeing both Mase and I at the same time, she feels it’s not good for her image.”

According to the Belizean rapper, if his version of the story wasn’t accurate, Ma$e would have immediately during the interview.
