The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has initiated a criminal investigation into sexual assault allegations against 85-year-old Motown icon Smokey Robinson. This development follows a $50 million civil lawsuit filed on May 6, 2025, by four former employees who accuse Robinson of repeated sexual misconduct over nearly two decades.
The plaintiffs, identified as Jane Does 1 through 4, allege that Robinson sexually assaulted and, in some cases, raped them during their employment between 2007 and 2024. The alleged incidents occurred at Robinson’s residences in California and Las Vegas. One woman claims she was assaulted at least 23 times during her tenure.
The lawsuit also names Robinson’s wife, Frances Robinson, accusing her of creating a hostile work environment and failing to prevent the alleged misconduct. The plaintiffs allege that Frances used racially insensitive language and was aware of her husband’s actions but did not intervene.
Attorneys Respond to Allegations
Robinson’s attorney, Christopher Frost, has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “vile” and “false.” He stated, “As this case progresses, the evidence will show that this is simply an ugly method of trying to extract money from an 85-year-old American icon.”
The plaintiffs’ attorneys, John Harris and Herbert Hayden, have expressed support for the ongoing criminal investigation. They assert that their clients are committed to cooperating with authorities to seek justice.
The women involved in the lawsuit have cited fears of retaliation, public shame, and potential immigration consequences as reasons for not reporting the alleged abuse earlier. They claim that Robinson used his celebrity status to intimidate and isolate them, making it difficult to come forward.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau is currently handling the investigation. No criminal charges have been filed at this time. The department has not provided further public comment regarding the case.
Robinson, known for his work with The Miracles and hits like “Tears of a Clown,” has not made a public statement beyond expressing that he is “appalled” by the allegations. His legal team continues to deny all claims and is preparing a formal response to the lawsuit.
As the investigation unfolds, the music industry and fans await further developments in this high-profile case.
