While Michelle Obama is taking a brief hiatus from her Becoming book tour to honor the late former President George H.W. Bush, fans can get the details about her about her life and last days in the White House from her latest promo stop with late night talk show host, Stephen Colbert.
The new best-selling author joined Colbert for the first time since leaving her FLOTUS post to gush about her new book, and she didn’t hold anything back.
Colbert asked Obama how she handled the night Donald Trump became president-elect, and she says she “just had to go to sleep.”
“You write in this book, ‘I saw a look on my husband’s face, and I just went to bed. I didn’t want to know.’ How did you sleep that night, and how have you slept since – because I have not.”
Before she responding, our Forever First Lady told Colbert he should sleep, then went on to say, “When I went to bed, I knew because when Barack got a call that some of the polling places were looking a bit odd – the numbers weren’t coming in the way they had thought – I thought, ‘That’s not a good sign. This shouldn’t even been close. So if it was close, it could be a problem.’ I just needed to sleep on that, and pray that maybe I was wrong.”
She continued, “We went about the task to try to quell the nerves of a lot of young people that were on our staff – because staff was a diverse staff. We had people who were same-sex partners; we had people who had families that were immigrants. Young people were afraid of what this meant, and there were a lot of tears. We had to be the moral compass.”
