SZA, the multifaceted artist known for her soulful tunes, has opened up about her aspirations for parenthood in a recent appearance on the SHE MD podcast. During the conversation with hosts Dr. Thais Aliabadi and Mary Alice Haney, the 34-year-old songstress disclosed her contemplation on fostering and co-parenting with her closest companion.
In a candid moment, SZA revealed, “Well, I asked my best friend if she would do it with me. She said, no.”
Despite the initial response, SZA remains undeterred, expressing her determination to persuade her friend. “Because we have too much on our plate. But I’m going to try to sweeten her up. She’s my bestie, but she’s also the smartest person, so it’s like even if we didn’t end up raising a child together like through a management lens, I’m going to force her to co-parent with me as my fake co-parent.”
The Grammy-winning artist has been discreet about her personal life, particularly her previous relationship with her former fiancé, which lasted for 11 years. However, she has occasionally shared snippets of her past experiences, shedding light on the influence of her ex-partner on her musical journey.
During an interview with Zane Lowe in December, SZA reflected on her early days in music, attributing her entry into the industry to her ex-fiancé’s support. ” [I] really only did music to prove a point,” she disclosed. “When I started making music, it was to my ex-fiancé, because he was paying for everything. My food, my clothes, where I lived—and he was eight years my senior, so I was so codependent.”
SZA’s musical prowess was recognized once again at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she clinched the award for Best R&B Song for her track “Snooze.” Reflecting on her moment of triumph, SZA admitted to feeling overwhelmed and surprised by her win. “It’s the culmination of everything. Of the moments leading up to that, even Lizzo and not realizing what was happening and being lost. Then I saw her and I was like, ‘Oh.’ I was realizing what was happening,” she shared exclusively with PEOPLE.
As SZA continues to captivate audiences with her soul-stirring music, her openness about her journey towards parenthood adds another layer of depth to her evolving narrative. With her bold revelation about exploring parenthood with her best friend, SZA exemplifies the modern complexities of relationships and the fluidity of family dynamics in today’s society.
