Tank Slams Aaliyah’s New Song Featuring His Vocals

This month marks 24 years since Aaliyah’s passing. In memory of her legacy, on Friday (Aug 1), her camp released a new song, “Gone”. The new song features Tank and archival vocals from Aaliyah.

However, according to Tank’s recent Instagram post, the TGT member did not approve the final version of the song. Tank began his post expressing that the song, which was first teased in May, was made out of love for her.

“The Aaliyah song you are hearing featuring myself, I did out of love for her. I had concerns and I expressed them. From the track to the vocals to the mix and to the visual,” he told his 2.1 million followers on Instagram. “I still went forward knowing I would at least be able to approve the final products. I haven’t approved one thing you’ve heard or seen.”

Tank did not call out any person or record label in particular. He instead wanted to voice his perspective to assure fans he did not co-sign the final production.

“Gone” captures the essence of love’s trials and the importance of communication. Preceding the 4-min track, Tank expresses his gratitude for his musical alliance and friendship with the late singer. Throughout the track, Aaliyah recounts her side of the story with Tank responding in a melodic delivery. “Gone” is a classic example of R&B storytelling.

Relationship

In his own words, Tank explained, “Getting the call to be part of Aaliyah’s legacy’s continuation is truly amazing. It is a full-circle moment and an honor to contribute to the project.”

Tank and Aaliyah’s professional relationship started in the late 90s. He sung background vocals on her 2001 hit, “Come Over”. In an interview with Elle, he shared how the opportunity unfolded.

“My dream collaboration has always been Aaliyah. I wish we could have really, really done something cool. The song you hear me on, ‘Come Over,’ I just happened to walk in the studio that day. We were going to check on Babygirl and she was working with Johnta. I soon as I walk in, she says, ‘Tank can do it!’ And Johnta says, ‘Tank can do it.’ And I said, ‘Tank can do what?’ They sit me in the booth and that’s how I got on ‘Come Over.’”
