Actor Taye Diggs, 54, says he is still open to love even as the dating landscape shifts around him. In a candid recent interview, Diggs said, “I’ll never give up. I’m just saying it’s not easy.”

Diggs, whose career spans stage and screen, points out that being single in his 50s feels different. “Now I have certain boundaries and my tastes have changed and my patience is low,” he said. He described navigating dating apps, texting rules and expectations as part of the “interesting trip” that comes with modern romance.

Life & Love: Parallels and Parenting

The actor took on the role of Darius, a single father in his 50s in the upcoming film His, Hers & Ours, and he sees himself in the character. “Being in your 50s, being single, being a Black man, trying to figure out if he’s ready for love. That’s a very specific kind of genre,” he said.

In real life, Diggs shares a 16-year-old son, Walker, with his ex-wife Idina Menzel. He calls fatherhood a grounding force. “Walker … keeps me solid. He makes me laugh. So I’ve been alright,” he remarked.

His co-parenting relationship is grounded in putting their child first. “Again, knock on wood … I attribute that to just both of us trying to put Walker first,” Diggs said.

Diggs admits he has been on the dating scene. “I had to make a decision, like, ‘I’m gonna date now,’” he told another outlet. He described getting himself out of his comfort zone, saying “When you’re younger, it’s kind of fun and exciting. Now you’re like, ‘What are we going to talk about? We’re going to talk about parents and where you’re coming from…’”

Despite the challenges, he remains hopeful. “It takes some work and attention. I’m taking it one day at a time because my taste will change hourly,” he said.
