In her new Peacock docuseries Tiffany Haddish Goes Off, comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish reflects on a deeply personal and symbolic event: she “married herself.” The unconventional self-marriage unfolds in episode five, titled “Here Comes the Bride,” and marks a turning point in her emotional journey.
Haddish explains the idea first struck her in 2018, during a relationship with a man she candidly calls a “buckethead.” He reportedly asked her, “How are you ever going to get you a husband if you don’t do what I tell you to do?” Haddish recalls responding, “I’ll be my husband. I could take care of me better than you could.”
She says that moment sparked a realization: “All these things I want from somebody else, I need to be giving to me.” She added, “If I’m able to do that, when that person shows up, it’s going to be so easy for us to come together.”
A Transformative Vow
During the ceremony — held on a girls’ trip to Africa — Haddish walked down an aisle carrying a bouquet, made vows to herself, kissed a mirror, and stepped on a glass, honoring her Jewish heritage with the traditional glass-smashing.
“I used to not show up for myself, do everything for everybody else and not take care of me,” Haddish tells USA Today. “And ever since I got married to me, baby, them boundaries — I see a difference in the way I wake up in the morning, and how I look in the mirror.” She says that now, “when I look at myself, I see somebody who is whole, still fragile, but well taken care of.”
Haddish says one key motivation for the self-marriage was accountability. “I thought to do that because first, I wanted to have a little party,” she told The New York Post. “Second, I also wanted to hold myself accountable for some things.”
She continued: “If you’re going to keep any promises in life, the promises you make to yourself are the main ones you need to be keeping. That’s the longest relationship you’re going to have … So, f**k it, I’m marrying me.”
Haddish says the experience has radically changed how she approaches relationships. She’s still open to love, but she’s now set a high bar for potential partners. “Everything that I’m doing for me — if a man can do that better than me, that’s my man,” she told USA Today.
She’s even noticed a shift in her dating life: “I’m getting more dates now, when I tell [men] I’m married,” she joked.
