Tito Jackson, a founding member of the iconic Jackson 5, died on Sunday at the age of 70. The news was first reported by Entertainment Tonight and confirmed by Tito’s nephew, Siggy Jackson, to PEOPLE. Tito’s sons—Taj, Taryll, and TJ—also shared a heartfelt tribute, stating, “We are shocked, saddened, and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being.”
Tito Jackson’s Legacy
Tito Jackson rose to fame as part of the Jackson 5, alongside brothers Michael, Jermaine, Jackie, and Marlon. Their string of hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including chart-toppers like “I Want You Back” and “ABC,” made them international sensations. Tito played guitar and contributed vocals to the group, although his more reserved presence was often overshadowed by younger brother Michael.
“I’ve always been the quietest member of the group, so people make jokes about me,” Tito remarked in a 2018 interview. Despite this, his contributions were instrumental in the band’s success, both musically and in their live performances.
The Jackson 5 eventually evolved into The Jacksons, with hits like “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” and “State of Shock,” the latter featuring Mick Jagger. In 1997, Tito and his brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy in music history.
Later Years and Solo Work
In recent years, Tito embraced his love for blues, releasing solo albums Tito Time in 2016 and Under Your Spell in 2021. “Blues had been the main music in my family. I just wanted to jam,” he said in an interview, reflecting on his career.
Tito’s sons honored his legacy by saying, “It will forever be ‘Tito Time’ for us.” He is survived by his three sons, whom he encouraged to pursue music. The family requests that fans remember Tito’s message to “Love One Another.”
