Viola Davis has revealed a secret about the 2017 Oscar Awards.

Dressed in a beautiful, custom-made orange gown, Davis was hiding something underneath: She was wearing sneakers.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, March 10, Fallon asked Davis what she remembered most about the evening,

”I won an Oscar. What do you think?” Davis said.. “But underneath that dress, this is what I think because I see them every single time. I have on platform sneakers that were specially made for me that were probably seven inches high.”

”Really!” Fallon said in response.

”Yeah!” replied Davis. “That’s what I remember about that moment,” she says, emphasizing while pointing to her shoes in the photo of herself receiving the award on stage, “I was wearing sneakers right there.”

Davis also spoke about seeing her Madame Tussauds wax figure for the first time in Los Angeles, Calif., on April 9, 2025. That statue depicts Davis wearing the same dress.

”It freaked me right the hell out,” Davis said.

Davis aslo shared that she had a fashion mishap at the 2026 Actor Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 1.

“I did rip my dress open, I did,” she told the late-night host. “But it’s all good!”

DAVIS IS DEBUTING AS A NOVELIST

Davis is also the author of her first novel, “Judge Stone,” a courtroom thriller she co-wrote with perennial bestseller James Patterson.

According to the synopsis, “Judge Stone” centers on Judge Mary Stone, a respected circuit judge in the tiny Alabama town of Union Springs who must navigate a deeply divisive, ethically fraught courtroom battle. When a doctor is charged under draconian abortion laws after performing a procedure on a 13-year-old girl, Stone must balance her devotion to justice, her community, and her own reelection prospects.”
