Wendy Osefo has resigned from her position as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Wesleyan University.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Osefo’s rep said she was not fired.
“Contrary to recent media reports, Dr. Wendy Osefo was not terminated from a faculty position at Wesleyan University,” the statement read. “She formally submitted her letter of resignation prior to any public announcement made by the university.”
“Dr. Osefo made the voluntary decision to step down from her role,” the statement continued. “This decision was made independently and communicated directly to the university before any external reports surfaced.”
Wesleyan University also confirmed Osefo’s resignation.
“Wendy Osefo is no longer an employee of Wesleyan University. She resigned from her position,” the school sad in a statement.
Osefo previously stepped down from her role as assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University during RHOP season 9. She wantedd to focus on her family. Later on, she announced her role as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Wesleyan University. At the school, she taught a Sociology of Reality TV course in November 2024.
Osefo spoke with Black Enterprise about creating a college course.
“I just started writing and writing and one sentence led to two and then two sentences led to four pages. And then eventually I had all of these pages where I was like, I want to do a class. And I wrote up a class and it’s titled The Sociology of Reality TV.”
Osefo and her husband, Eddie Osefo, were arrested for fraud in Maryland.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in Westminster, Md.,stated that they arrested and accused the couple of insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and making a false statement to a police officer.
Wendy is facing a total of 15 charges. She’s charged with seven felony false/misleading info fraud in excess of $300. Also, seven misdemeanor on-False/mislead info fraud in excess of $300, and a misdemeanor charge of a false statement to an officer.
Eddie is facing 18 charges. He’s charged with nine felony false/misleading info fraud in excess of $300. Also, eight misdemeanor on-False/mislead info fraud in excess of $300, and a misdemeanor charge of a false statement to an officer.
