A new documentary hopes to answer questions from concerned Wendy Williams fans as she struggles to exit her conservatorship.
Investigation Discovery & Telepictures have announced an upcoming special Trapped: What is Happening to Wendy Williams? detailing her alleged entrapment.
Per the news release, the documentary dives deep into the growing #FreeWendy movement, a campaign led by fans and advocates demanding the release of iconic media personality Wendy Williams from the guardianship she’s been under since 2022. This special marks the first collaboration between ID, Warner Bros. Television Group’s Telepictures, and EXTRA.
The Former talk show host insisted on The Breakfast Club show that she is “not cognitively impaired.” She tearfully explained that she’s being kept in a “luxury prison” with only limited contact with her family.
“I’m in this place where the people are in their 90s and their 80s and their 70s. … I have breakfast, lunch and dinner right here on the bed. I watch TV, I listen to radio, I look out the window, I talk on the phone,” she said.
Williams retired from her TV show in 2022. In February 2024, her team said she had been diagnosed the previous year with primary progressive aphasia, a nervous system syndrome that affects the ability to communicate, and frontotemporal dementia, which affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain and is usually associated with behavioral and personality changes, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Williams had also been open with her TV audience in the past about her struggles with addiction and Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder.
