Whitney Houston’s best friend Robyn Crawford is speaking out on her relationship with the late singer and putting all the rumors and speculations to rest.

In her new memoir A Song for You: My Life with Whitney Houston, Crawford details her relationship with Whitney for the first time. The two met in East Orange, New Jersey in 1980 and worked as summer camp counselors.

“I’d come to the point where I felt the need to stand up for our friendship. And I felt an urgency to stand up and share the woman behind the incredible talent. We wanted to be together, and that meant just us.”

Things came to a halt between them when Houston landed her deal with Clive Davis at Arista. Crawford stated Whitney handed her a blue bible in 1982 and told her they couldn’t be physical anymore.

“She said we shouldn’t be physical anymore, because it would make our journey even more difficult. She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us and back in the ’80s that’s how it felt.”

She adds,

“I kept it safe. I found comfort in my silence. We never talked about labels, like lesbian or gay. We just lived our lives and I hoped it could go on that way forever.”
