Whoopi Goldberg shared why she’s not a fan of the term “nepo baby.”
On The View, singer Gracie Abrams acknowledged that she has benefited as a “nepo baby.” She is the daughter of J.J. Abrams and exec Katie McGrath. Goldberg then shared his disdain for the term.
“Let me tell you what being a nepo baby is like,” Goldberg said. “When you say that about somebody, it’s like calling them a DEI hire. It’s like saying you didn’t get this on your own,” Goldberg continued. “This girl has — she’s incredibly talented, and nepo babies, they don’t have a choice who they’re born to!” Sunny Hostin agreed with Goldberg’s take.
Goldberg then pointed to her daughter, Alexandrea “Alex” Martin Dean.
“I know my kid doesn’t like being called a nepo baby. What she does, she does on her own,” she said. “She got, it and he worked her behind off. And whether she is as successfulIs me, or not as successful, this is her life.
”Once they step out of your house, they are going out to do their thing. I get very annoyed with this subject because I don’t like when people don’t give — don’t assume!” Goldberg continued. “You assumed somebody helped me. You’re assuming that they did this. Don’t make that the question you ask me when I come in.”
Dean, Goldberg’s only daughter, has built a multi-faceted career in the entertainment industry. She’s an actress, producer, and entrepreneur. Dean first stepped into the Hollywood spotlight in 1994, when she was named Miss Golden Globe at the 50th Golden Globe Awards. The title is traditionally awarded to the child of a high-profile industry veteran.
As an actress, Martin made early on-screen appearances in notable 90s and early 2000s projects, including a role as a classroom student in her mother’s hit film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), the indie satire American Intellectuals (1999), and the television movie Call Me Claus (2001). She later transitioned behind the camera, earning production credits as a producer for the animated short film Descendants (2008) and as an associate producer on the short film Sensitive Men (2018).
