Wiz Khalifa is facing almost a year in prison in Romania for weed possession, per HipHopDx
The sentencing comes nearly a year and a half after the rapper was arrested for consuming marijuana during a music festival performance in the Eastern European country.
Khalifa, 38, was sentenced by the Constanța Court of Appeal on Thursday, (Dec 18), for “committing the crime of possession of high-risk drugs, without right, for own consumption,” after his July 2024 performance at the Beach Please! Festival, per Agerpres and CanCan.
At the time, he wrote on X, “I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”
Prosecutors alleged that Khalifa was discovered with over 18 grams of cannabis.
Romania’s cannabis laws are among the strictest in Europe, banning all forms of marijuana use. The offense of possession for personal use is punishable with sentences ranging from 3 months to 2 years in prison or a fine.
In April, Consanta County’s lower court issued the “Roll Up” rapper a criminal fine of 3,600 lei ($830) for “illegal possession of dangerous drugs,” according to the Associated Press. However, prosecutors appealed against the decision, wanting a higher sentence
It isn’t clear whether Romanian authorities will seek to file an extradition request, since Khalifa is a U.S. citizen and doesn’t reside in Romania.
