Cynthia Brown is set to walk free next week just eight months after Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam commuted her sentence.
Brown who is now 31 will be released Wednesday, August 7. She was serving a life sentence for the murder of a “43-year-old man who solicited sex from her she was 16-years-old. Her story garnered national attention after it was ruled that she would have to serve 51 years in prison especially when critics revealed that Tennessee’s harsh life sentences for teens.
Brown will get to tell her story her way. While in prison, she earned her Associate’s Degree and mentored other female inmates. “With God’s help, I am committed to living the rest of my life helping others, especially young people. My hope is to help other young girls avoid ending up where I have been.”
