2019 has been quite a year for the culture, and it’s only just getting started. Neighborhoods across Washington D.C. are boycotting the city’s go-go musical staple; the country is in an intensified racial uproar after the release of Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us; the Black community said farewell to King Ermias aka Nipsey Hussle way too soon, and everyone still seems to be fighting for a seat at the table. And last night, as Black Hollywood, politicians, and influencers alike gathered for the 2019 BET Awards, all in attendance had one goal in mind: using the night to turn up and turn out for the culture.
Cardi B. and Offset set the tone for the night with a fiery performance of the latest single, “Clout,” and Cardi’s recently released hit, “Pressed.” Tyler Perry motivated the masses of people inside Phylm Studios when he said he was tired of waiting for a seat at the table, so he decided to create his own. Mary J. Blige inspired as she highlighted the fact that she’s not just in this industry to survive, but to thrive. Lauren London did it for her city (Los Angeles) when she, her son Kross, Nipsey Hussle’s daughter, Imani, and Nip’s sister, Samantha, accepted the Humanitarian Award on behalf of the late and great Compton-bred rapper.
From the moment the Bardi Gang leader and her hubby lit up the stage with fireworks to the moment Regina Hall said goodnight, there was never a dull minute during this year’s awards. Check out this year’s unforgettable, must-see for-the-culture moments.
