Actor Joe Morton Tells Lenny Green How Papa Pope Approaches Life (Off Camera), What Drives Him to Act + the Progression of Black Media [VIDEO]

Papa Pope may be done with scandals, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t still have a trick or two up his sleeve.

Actor Joe Morton — who many of you love watching play the role of Papa Pope on Scandal — stopped by The Quiet Storm to talk with our own Lenny Green, and detail his life on and off the camera.

Interested in Morton’s approach to acting and deciding what roles to take on, Lenny Green asked the Emmy-winning actor what he would say about his life. His answer was simple: “Consistency.”

“I’ve tried to put together a string of Black characters that were not necessarily pimps and were not drug dealers, which is what I walked into as a young man,” Morton said.

He continued, “With Scandal and Papa Pope, I was actually looking at that point – deliberately – for a smart, bad guy.”

Lenny and Morton went on to talk about the progression of Blacks in Hollywood, the roles he seeks to play, and how to change the narrative for Black people in television and film.
