During this year’s Morehouse commencement, the guest speaker, billionaire Robert F. Smith, made a huge announcement to the graduating class. Smith, who received an honorary doctorate from the college, announced that his family will be giving a grant to end the student debt for the entire Class of 2019.
He stated in front of the graduating class of 400 seniors, “This is my class and I know my class will pay this forward.” As reported by the AJC, once the announcement was made, of the graduates mother, Tonga Releford said that her son’s loans would be around $70,000 to pay off. Releford stated that, “I feel like it’s Mother’s Day all over again.”
