Boxer Patrick Day Passes Away After Knockout That Lead to Traumatic Brain Injuries

27 year old boxer, Patrick Dayhas passed away on Wednesday, October 16th after suffering from traumatic brain injuries from his fight with Charles Conwell on Saturday, October 12th. 

 

Day was knocked down several times throughout the match between the 21 year old boxer Charles Conwell, but during the 10th round of the USBA super welterweight title bout, Day was ultimately beaten by his opponent in which herequired medical attention in the ring and was taken away on a stretcher and transported to a nearby hospital. 

 

The boxer’s promoter, Lou Dibella, issued a statement that stated “On behalf of Patrick’s family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury.” Dibella also shared some heartfelt words when she said “Pat’s kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met” and highlighted his impact on boxing when she added “He was recognized as one of Long Island’s finest professional fighters for years. He was a fixture in the boxing community throughout New York City.”

 

Patrick Day developed his own lane as a boxer and inspired many people, especially the ones within his community. Statements like “Patrick Day didn’t need to box. He came from a good family, he was smart, educated, had good values and had other avenues available to him to earn a living” and “He chose to box, knowing the inherent risks that every fighter faces when he or she walks into a boxing ring. Boxing is what Pat loved to do. It’s how he inspired people and it was something that made him feel alive” that came from his promoter highlights how diverse and passionate he was as a boxer and as a person overall.
