The super bowl halftime show has been a staple of the sporting event ever since Michael Jackson performed and made it what it is today.  This year though a lot of artists turned down the offers to perform in the super bowl such as Rihanna, Cardi B and Pink.

In 2016, former 49er’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice. Because of this the NFL took action and decided to not resign him causing even more controversy and backlash. Ultimately, Maroon 5, Travis Scott, and Big Boi headlined the show.

Following their performance, CeeLo went on twitter to congratulate Big Boi and called out protestors saying:

“Yo big we riding wit you fam DO THAT SHIT! Fuck these so-called protesters you just got 100m worth of press. I’ll kill for you!”

His comment about people boycotting the NFL sparked a lot of backlash on social media. He has since deleted the tweet and issued an apology stating that he should have chosen his words more carefully. Ceelo then took to Instagram to further explain his comment saying that it was a misunderstanding and what he said in the heat of the moment was due to his excitement following the halftime performance.

Ceelo also shared that he would never disrespect or devalue the social movement that these protestors are trying to convey. Despite those harsh comments, Ceelo says he was just trying to support his friend instead of taking shots at Collin Kaepernick supporters.

I’d like to address what has become a large misunderstanding and I hope that you will receive this post as clarity, closure, and, most important, an apology. I posted yesterday, excited in the heat of the moment and spirit of triumph in support of my fellow Atlantan, teammate and brother @bigboi. My post was speaking exclusively to him and about those who were opposed to him performing. I would NEVER disrespect or devalue the stance or the severity of why it has been a call to arms as far as our living situation here in America. I am well aware, I fully support, and I stand with all of my extended family around the world. Once again, I sincerely apologize to those I have offended and hope this helps clarify my intentions.
