Cicely Tyson Will Have Street Named After Her In Harlem

The late Cicely Tyson will be honored with a street renaming. 

According to reports, the ceremony will take place on September 17th on East 101st street between 3rd and Lexington Avenues and the street will be renamed Cicely Tyson Way, the area where the actress grew up. 

Diana Ayala, New York City Council Deputy Speaker will be the presenter at the newly-named street. The approval for the renaming took place last Summer. This celebration will also have appearances from the Dance Theatre of Harlem and The Caribbean-American Sports and Youth Movement Steel Orchestra.

Tyson was an honorary member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the organization will help with the production of this event. Cicely Tyson’s acting career spanned for decades. She starred in movies such as Roots, Sounder, and many Tyler Perry films. Tyson has also won many awards including three Emmy Awards, a Tony, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an Honorary Academy Award, a SAG Award, and NAACP Awards.

The actress passed away in January 2021 at 96 years old.
