Back in 2005 Trey Songz stepped on the scene and stole our hearts.
Trey Songz, born Tremaine Aldon Neverson, is a singer, songwriter, and actor from Petersburg, Virginia. Songz released his first album, I Gotta Make It in 2005 and has been topping the charts, ever since. At the release of the project, it reached number 20 on the Billboard 200. The album also produced his debut hit single, “Gotta’ Make It” featuring Twista. Here is when the world fell in love with the Prince of Virginia.
Trey kept the momentum going, as he enlisted several huge artists on his sophomore album. “Trey Day” was released in 2007 and featured R Kelly, Stargate, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and more. The album peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200. As he started to gain more recognition, he was nominated for the “Best Male R&B Vocal Performance” Grammy. The album is certified gold, and you may remember blasting his hit single “Can’t Help But Wait.”
With two successful albums and a Grammy nomination under his belt, Songz was Ready to show a different version of him on his third album. On August 31, 2009, Trey released Ready which is said to be one of the biggest albums of his career thus far.
“This album is very self-defining and very definitive of the type of artist I’m going to be for the rest of my career,” Songz told Billboard in July 2009. Chopping off his cornrows, and rocking a fresh new clean cut, the artist was transitioning from teenage heart throb to grown man, and his music transformed with him.
Ready became Songz’ then-highest on the Billboard 200, coming in at number three in its opening week. “I Invented Sex” featuring Drake, earned Songz his first chart-topper on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The project became Songz’ first certified gold and platinum album. It was also his first (and only) album to be nominated for a Best Contemporary Album Grammy, in 2010.
At this point in his career, Trey found his sound. Around this time he established his signature “Yuh/Yup” vocal stamp. His fourth album, Passion, Pain & Pleasure lived up to expectations. His name was amongst the hall of fame of contemporary R&B gents. Released on September 14, 2010, the project’s lead single “Bottoms Up” featuring Nicki Minaj reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/HipHop Songs, and at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
After countless chart topping singles, four solid albums, and Grammy nominations, Songz finally earned his first number one album. Chapter V shows his growth as an artist, his music, and his crown as the reigning prince of R&B. The project was released on August 21, 2012, sold 135,000 copies in its first week and earned a Grammy nomination.
The album produced four hit singles including, “Dive In,” Fumble,” “Heart Attack,” and “2 Reasons.”
Throughout his career, Trey has shown more than the evolution of an artist — but more so the evolution of a man.
