Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, has been sentenced on federal civil rights charges for violating George Floyd’s civil rights.
According to reports, Chauvin has originally pleaded not guilty to the charges but ended up changing his plea to guilty. The 46-year-old also admitted to keeping his knee on Floyd’s neck after he became unresponsive.
The plea agreement came with a 20 to 25-year sentence with him to serve both of his state and federal sentences at the same time while in federal prison.
Derek Chauvin was also convicted on state charges for murder and manslaughter for the death of George Floyd. In 2020, we reported that George Floyd was detained for allegedly using a fake $20 bill at a local store.
While being detained, Chauvin held his knee in Floyd’s neck for over 9 minutes, causing Floyd to suffocate.
