WBLS celebrates Black History Month with “Game Changers” and we’re kicking it off by highlighting 14-year-old author and activist, Marley Dias.

Marley is the founder of the #1000BlackGirlBooks Resource Guide, which she created at the tender age of 11. The young writer was driven by her passion for reading and desire to see a larger variety of books for girls of color.

Marley believes that character representation and diversity in literature is very important. Showing minority children storylines and ideas that they can relate to are essential for their academic growth.

The young entrepreneur also wants black girls to find confidence in their own identities through books and “use their passions as fuel for their greater fights for equity, or for change, or for justice.”

The #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign has grown tremendously since its inception. A resource guide app is currently being developed to help readers easily find and support authors that are telling their story.

Marley now leads a global movement focused on the need for curriculums to include “diversity and greater education on the experiences of black girls.”

She has also written and published her own book, Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!, and was the youngest person named on Time magazine’s “Top 25 Most Influential Teens of 2018.”

Marley Dias, thank you for using your voice through activism, today we recognize you as a Black History “Game Changer.”
