R&B singer and former member of Destiny’s Child, Kelly Rowland, speaks out for the first time about being labeled as second best. She refers to it as the “elephant in the room.” On May 18th, Kelly released her awaited EP, The Kelly Rowland Edition. A behind the scenes video during a studio session was released. During the session, Kelly was asked about the inspiration behind the music, she opened up about being in someone’s shadow, referring to Beyonce’s of course.

“The elephant in the room for me has always been second best,” she said. “That’s actually the first time I’ve said that out loud.”

During the making of Kelly’s EP, she called on young singer/songwriters and producers and created the project within one week. During the behind the scenes video, Kelly was asked why she felt so conformable with opening up to the group of writers about the “elephant in the room,” she stated, “I think what kind of took me back was how comfortable I felt in the room to be so transparent. It’s got to feel right, and everybody feels like that in here.”

Although Kelly and Beyonce are no longer group members, they have remained as best friends throughout the years. Kelly revealed that despite being labeled as second best to her best friend, they still love and support each other through it all. “I think the people wanted those stories for years, and that’s just so sad on them because it’s not like that,” she said. “It’s so crazy, and I just think it’s so sad that we live in a world where people don’t want to see women get along and encourage and empower each other, and that’s what we do for each other.”
