This is simply amazing! The founders of Mented Cosmetics, Starface and Plus have come together to create new contraception for women.
Julie Schott, Brian Bordanick, and Amanda E. Johnson are the creators of the new FDA-approved morning after, Julie. As Essence reports, they created this pill to help “remove stigmas around such forms of contraception and make them more accessible to marginalized communities within the health and wellness space.”
This emergency contraceptive comes at a time when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade earlier this year, which resulted in new abortion bans.
During an interview, Johnson stated that Julie was made especially with Black women in mind. “I think I want to change the face and narrative of women’s healthcare.”
She continued, “For so long it has been a type of woman who has access to innovation in healthcare or a type of person who even needs emergency contraception.”
Johnson also went on to clarify the difference between the morning-after pill and the abortion pill. “Emergency contraception is used so that you don’t get pregnant whereas the abortion pills are used to end a pregnancy and existing pregnancy.”
