Thanksgiving is typically a time for families to come together and celebrate the beginning of the holiday season, but one North Carolina resident found in the hospital after an intense argument with his father over football.

According to the Cary Police Department, 51-year-old Jorge Luis Valencia-Lamadrid shot his 21-year-old son, Esteban Marley Valencia, in the hand and leg after Valencia and his brother were debating about NFL players’ right to protest during games. Valencia-Lamadrid told police Valencia “physically attacked” his other son, so he retrieved his shotgun.

It’s reported that the 21-year-old son then began throwing furniture and hit his father in the face with a water bottle. Valencia-Lamadrid says he had been holding the gun by its pistol grip and squeezed the trigger.

Valencia was taken to the hospital while his father was arrested and charged with aggravated assault around 6:00 p.m.
