A nurse was fired from a New York hospital after a video went viral of the newborn being slammed into the bassinet while in the NICU.

The child’s mother, Consuelo Saravia said tha the video was heartbreaking. “I couldn’t stop crying, I couldn’t even sleep.” The baby, Nikko, was 2 days old at the time of the incident. His father, Fidel Sinclair, went to check on his son and saw that he was crying through a small curtain opening covering the window.

Sinclair began to record his son on his phone when he captured the shocking incident. He witnessed the nurse picking Nikko up and then slamming the baby down on his face. “I don’t know, it just broke me,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do.”

Consuelo went on to speak about her reaction after she saw the video, “I told her ‘I don’t want to touch my child. You just slammed him.’ She said ‘Oh no, if you think I mishandled him or anything, I’m sorry.’”

The video was then shown to hospital administrators in which they said immediate action was taken including the termination of the nurse.

Fidel that he was happy that he went to check on his son when he did. “If it wasn’t for God who sent me to check on him we would have never seen any of that happen. And it would have kept happening overnight not only to him but the other babies, too.”

He continued, “I find it messed up that in a room like that they have all the curtains closed.” The hospital spoke in defense of the closed curtains on the windows in the NICU.

“It’s standard procedure to have closed curtains in the neonatal ICU to provide privacy for the patients and their families.”

The incident is still under investigation and the baby is home doing well.
