Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in the history of the gymnastics, has made history once again.
The 26 year-old won the all-around title at the U.S. gymnastics national championships in San Jose, California, on Sunday (Aug 27). Biles won the national title with a two-day score of 118.450. She posted a 59.300 score on Friday and followed up with a 59.150 on Sunday.
Biles is now the first American gymnast to win eight national all-around titles — male or female. She is also now the oldest woman to win the title. Linda Metheny-Mulvihill, who won at 24 in 1971, had been the oldest champion.
“It’s really amazing. Everybody in here believes in me, and my teammates believe in me, my coaches, my family, everyone,” Biles told NBC after receiving a standing ovation for her achievement.
In a bedazzled black leotard, Biles gave clean executions on the bar, vault, and beam. Her floor routine was equally as impressive leaving the crowd in near-silence as they watched on.
The historic win comes three weeks after Biles competed at the U.S. Classic, her first time since the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. At the time she said she felt uneasy and nervous.
[At] Classics, I was like: ‘Oh, God, I don’t want to do this. I feel like I’m going to throw up,’ ” Biles said. “This one, I was like: ‘Oh, wow, championships came so soon. We’re ready to compete. We’re prepared.’ I still think there were some nerves, obviously, which is normal going into each and every event. But I knew I was capable of it.”
