Stokley Cast As Rick James In ‘Super Freak: The Rick James Story’ Stage Musical

Stokley, former member of Mint Condition is using his talents to embody the late Rick James in a new musical about the legendary performer.

James’ daughter, Ty James and playwright and producer Je’Caryous Johnson have joined creative forces for the musical production Super Freak: The Rick James Story, which will chronicle the King Of Punk-Funk’s wild life and times. The traveling musical premieres in mid-March.

The musical  delves deep into the legendary musician’s tumultuous life and extraordinary talent, exploring the highs and lows of his career against the backdrop of his unforgettable hits. According to the release, “audiences will be transported on a musical journey through James’ groundbreaking music and the compelling narrative of his life, filled with passion, excess, and undeniable talent.”

Ty James is looking forward to seeing Stokley star as her superstar paternal figure. “I know playing my dad is stepping into some big shoes, but I am confident Stokley will kill it. My dad would be so proud,” she shared via press release.

It takes a talent such as Stokley who is a master of many instruments to fill the shoes of a maestro like Rick James. This musical will undoubtedly shock the world and open people’s eyes to just how much of a Super Freakin’ genius Rick James was.”

Stokley, a GRAMMY-nominated vocalist, songwriter, and producer, is best known as the lead singer and drummer for the legendary R&B group Mint Condition. With a career spanning decades, Stokley has collaborated and writtern for some of the biggest names in music.

Rick James was Motown’s hottest artist in the 80s releasing chart-topping hits “Super Freak” and “Give It To Me Baby” on his 1981 LP, Street Songs. These tracks showcased James’ mesmerizing bass lines and infectious grooves that beckoned listeners to the dance floor. He was a sought-after producer, working on hits for Eddie Murphy (“Party All the Time”), The Temptations (“Standing On The Top”), The Mary Jane Girls and Teena Marie.

“Super Freak: The Rick James Story” will embark on a nationwide tour, captivating audiences in cities across the United States. The tour kicks off on March 14th at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in Houston, TX, and will continue through June, culminating in a series of performances at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.
