On Thursday, the Supreme Court officially banned affirmative action in higher education admissions, stating that race can no longer be a factor in admitting students.

The 6-to-3 decision from the conservative Supreme Court to ban affirmative action came after the case, Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, which challenged Harvard and the University of North Carolina’s admissions programs.

Chief Justice John Roberts said the majority opinion that “a student must be treated based on his or her experiences as an individual- not on the basis of race.” He continued, “Many universities have for too long done just the opposite, and in doing so, they have concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice.”

The three liberal justices fought to keep the affirmative action rule in place and used the Fisher v. University of Texas case as an example, which was the decision to uphold the legality of race-conscious admissions.

This decision is the Supreme Court’s way to reshape American law. What are your thoughts on this?
