The 18-year-old involved in a hit-and-run that left a 16-year-old cyclist dead in Queens has been indicted.
In April, we reported that the Levittown resident, Yaser Ibrahim, was the driver behind the car that hit and killed Jayden McLaurin after running a red light at the interaction of 21st Street and 21st Avenue in Astoria.
McLaurin was taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He suffered from severe head and body trauma. Police revealed the car, a 2022 BMW X7, was left a few blocks away with damages to the bumper and windshield.
After his arrest, the police learned that Ibrahim only had a learner’s permit and not a driver’s license. Queens DA Melinda Katz said, “The rules of the road and licensing requirements exist to prevent tragedies like this one.”
She continued, “We will hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for the young victim and his loved ones.”
The suspect was indicted on manslaughter, leaving the scene of an incident, criminally negligent homicide, failing to stop at a red light, as well as other related offenses. If he is convicted, he will face between five to 15 years in prison.
